The story of Los Altos, although dated, is still changing rapidly today. In the late 1800s, the city of Los Altos was purchased by the Southern Pacific Railroad Company, headed by Paul Shoup. Shoup quickly began building the town up and for that, was named “The Father of Los Altos.” Although originating as a small agricultural town noted mostly for its numerous apricot orchards, many families soon began to move into the small community. In the 1950s, many new businesses opened up, and the area began to build its town with stores. During this time, a small movie theater appeared along with the first KFC restaurants in the area. Many of these buildings still exist today but have changed ownership. These include sites such as the current Le Boulanger restaurant located in downtown Los Altos which was reinvented from a pharmacy building. In addition to this, the Los Altos Library used to be the Southern Pacific Power House, but was renovated to become an important part of what the town has to offer. Innovations all over town continued to be made such as the addition of buses and 15 schools, six of which still exist today. Today, the town continues to grow as it develops into an even more popular area with the addition of new attractions that are sure to make history.
From diverse extracurricular activities to varying course loads, the modern high school student can have a lot to worry about. Factoring in societal pressures and relationships can be even more challenging, especially when body image becomes part of the equation. Even though this issue may take a backseat in the view of some students, body image is a constantly evolving concept, defined by the nature of society at the time. The pressures to meet this “acceptable” body image can lead students to unhealthy habits and push others to extremes. Media exposure, gender and self-perception all contribute to these actions and help to promote this idea of an “ideal” body image. The challenge is finding a way to shift this societal perspective.

Lesbian. Gay. Bisexual. Transgender. There are many identities encompassed in the LGBTQ spectrum, and those identifying as LGBTQ can have differing definitions of what each one truly means. While there has been progress toward sexual and gender equality, problems still exist for those who identify outside of typical heterosexual, male-female gender system. Now, with new legislation relating to LGBTQ rights and the Supreme Court debating on Proposition 8, the several upcoming months could be either a giant step forward or back in this struggle. So, what does it mean to be a part of the LGBTQ community at this time?
TweetSexism is officially defined as behavior, conditions or attitudes that foster stereotypes of social roles based on sex. Yet this definition drastically oversimplifies a national issue into a few concise words: there is still a significant struggle left in finding an agreeable equality between men and women with their political, economic and social rights. In a country that is in the mist of many other social movements, there must also be a active consideration of this issue that is in reality closer to everyone in the student body than it may seem.
TweetFrom South Africa and Haiti to San Francisco and the Day Worker’s Center, students at school are integral parts of a variety of diverse communities. Whether they are global or local, some connections have been around for quite some time while others are just being forged, encouraging this communal development as the boundaries of what students call home expand. Every year, as new clubs are founded and new trips are planned, the high school serves as a testament for the ceaseless possibilities students have to explore new and pre-existing communities.

TweetFor many of us, it’s hard to imagine the school—the quad, the buildings, the sports, the classes—as being anything other than what we see today.
The school has evolved dramatically since it was first established in 1954. It’s been almost six decades — 58 years to be exact — and a lot has changed.
Over the past decade, the school has seen buildings added, policies changed and teaching staff modified. The population, which often escapes people’s notice, has been changing as well, causing an increase in the diversity at school.
TweetWhile the past is solid and verifiable and the present surrounds us, the future is unknown. However, observing our surroundings can serve as a good indication for understanding what the future will hold.
