Alta Vista High School invited the Santa Clara County poet laureate Sally Ashton to speak today, February 7. This honor is given to an exemplary poet in the Santa Clara County district every two years, as the applicants are judged by the Ats Council of Silicon Valley.
Ten years ago, the school was a different place. There were fewer students, fewer buildings and fewer resources to go around. Various classrooms were under construction.
Most students have left the campus by 6:30 p.m., but one group has just arrived and is prepared to stay for hours. The mock trial team, composed of a group of students who are interested in trials, court cases and law is advised by history teachers April Fritz and Deedee Pearce.
Many students have used (and been distracted by) applications like Angry Birds, Words with Friends and Temple Run. Meanwhile, some of their classmates are creating the applications that they purchase from the App Store.
For Hardy Jones, a retired orthopedic surgeon, sculpting and surgery are closely related.
Make a list of your extracurriculars. Now list why you do each of them. If the reason for any of them is any iteration of the phrase “looks good on college app,” stop doing those right now. In the heat of the Cold War, just 10 years after the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S. water polo team was in a battle with Cuba for the 1971 Pan American water polo championship in Cali, Columbia. At the start of the match, the spectators heavily favored the Cuban squad, cheering noisily for their Latin neighbors.
