Avengers Assemble: Adaptation Rises to New Heights

By nature, superheroes are larger than life. The same is quite true for the movie adaptation of what is arguably Marvel’s biggest claim to fame: “The Avengers.” By setting up for this movie since the 2008 premiere of “Iron Man,” Marvel has slowly built a background through their many movies over the past few years.

‘Divergent’ Explores Dystopian World Founded on Virtues

Set in a world similar to the one in The Hunger Games, Veronica Roth’s first book “Divergent”, follows the life of a young protagonist named Beatrice Prior who lives in a futuristic dystopian society in Chicago. There are five different factions dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue: Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful) and Erudite (the intelligent). The Abnegation are the leaders of the government—something that will largely come into play toward the end of the book. At the age of 16, all boys and girls must go through a test on a specific day that will help them choose a faction to live in for the rest of their lives.

Indie Music Community Creates New Subculture

The song “We are Young” by fun. didn’t make its way up to the top of the Billboard 100 chart simply through its anthem-like call, but through the rise of a genre and a culture: indie music.
Formally known as independent music, the name calls to the spirit of the youthful and indeterminate culture. Indie music can’t be easily classified by the number of beats or the instruments used. As a new-age fusion, the subcultures range from genres such as indie folk with its guitars and relaxed melodies, to glitchy indie music that uses synthesizers and lo-fi sound recording. Most of the time, the music tends to have some basic rock influences while using a mix of electronic and acoustic beats. One thing is for sure with indie music: it’s not your typical mainstream electronic or pop music, and it’s definitely not your traditionally produced kind of music.

‘The Iron Lady’: Politics, Power and Poignancy

As an American teenager, I find myself knowing embarrassingly little about Margret Thatcher, or British politics in general. Despite this, however, I didn’t find myself particularly hindered by my lack of knowledge while watching a movie marketed as the story of a important political figure.

Blockbuster Closing: The End to Renting Movies?

Recently, the Blockbuster on El Monte closed permanently. The news didn’t seem to shock me–I hadn’t stepped into the store in over a year. The only memory I retained was when I had come to rent a last-minute movie for a friend’s birthday party.

Ramen Revelations

I’ve never had real ramen before. When my mom went to China for a month, all she left was a huge box of convenience store ramen packages and Quaker oatmeal. (To her credit, she only did so because she knew I couldn’t handle anything other than adding water.)

So imagine my surprise when I learned that ramen was not just something haggard college students ate and was actually a delicacy. To celebrate my newfound love for ramen, I decided to christen the top ramen shops in the Bay Area with Talon’s ramen expert Jasmine Xu.

Thanksgiving leftovers aren’t just scraps of food

As Thanksgiving quickly approaches, there’s no doubt many mouths will be watering in anticipation of savory turkey, mashed potatoes, buttered rolls, mouth-watering pumpkin pie and many more foods.
For this holiday, it’s common to have a lot of leftovers. Maybe your family is planning to cook more food than necessary or perhaps your family will overestimate the amount needed. Either way, there are enough leftovers for the next week or so.
However, instead of having to deal with the same food every day, there are many ways in which you can get creative with and put a new spin on your leftovers.

Skyrim: A true gaming masterpiece

Skyrim is the latest installment of the Elder Scrolls, a series of immersive fantasy action roleplaying games made by Bethesda. The game doesn’t present a goal to accomplish so much as an enormous world to explore in complete freedom, though there is a primary plot line as well. So, after playing limbo with the graphics settings for about half an hour to accommodate my rusty old laptop, I began my epic adventure in the land of Skyrim—almost.
