Main Street Hosts Farewell Concert

On Saturday, April 4, Main Street hosted its annual Farewell Concert in the First United Methodist Church in Palo Alto at 5 p.m. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Main Street Singers, as well as its annual international tour. In the past, the group has traveled to a total of 80 places and five continents. The Main Street Singers will depart for its tour of Spain and Portugal on Sunday, April 5.

At the concert, the Main Street Singers will perform a variety of pieces ranging from Renaissance to contemporary styles, based on their planned stops during the upcoming international tour.

“We have a piece that was written for a city we are going to, Evora, Portugal, and it’s a tango,” choir director Mark Shaull said. “We have other pieces that are Spanish for our time in Spain. [The show is] a combination of those pieces… that represent these different styles, whether it is romantic, Renaissance or contemporary.”

The intent of the concert is to recognize the hard work that the singers have done over the year to their community.

“The concert serves to give the local community, parents especially, a flavor of the Main Street Singers’ repertoire and sound in the style of a typical concert we would perform on our international tour,” Main Street Singer senior Vishnu Bachani said. “It essentially gives us an opportunity to showcase all the hours of rehearsal we put in during the March rehearsals.”

For many of the Main Street Singers, the Farewell Concert represents a culmination of determination throughout their four years at Los Altos High School.

“Many of them didn’t even sing before they came to Los Altos High School,” Shaull said. “They began to sang here [and] they have had the opportunities to get involved in the other groups. So that’s the exciting part of our department that people can become involved and become so proficient like that.”

More than a performance, the Main Street Singers’ Farewell Concert offers a glimpse of the group’s dedication throughout the whole year.

“For me it’s a time to acknowledge all the work we have all put into making the group as great as it can be,” Main Street Singer junior Maribelle Dickins said.
