Amnesty International to hold human rights week

The Amnesty International club is dedicating the week of Monday, December 7 to Friday, December 11 to raising awareness for human rights.

On Monday, December 7, there will be presentations from guest speaker Mark Kimbler during periods 2 through 4 and a panel discussion at 7 p.m. in the Eagle Theatre.

According to Amnesty International co-adviser Seth Donnelly, Kimbler will discuss the death penalty and relevant issues such as racism, execution of innocents and unequal access to court representation. Sergio Maraboli, a former political prisoner from Chile, and Pierre Labossiere, founder of the Haiti Action Committee, are to lead the evening panel discussion on immigrant rights.

“There was so much positive momentum last year with the open mikes and increasingly larger number of students thinking about human rights issues that this year the students wanted to continue that momentum,” Donnelly said.

Members of Amnesty International thought the timing would be appropriate since Thursday, December 10 marks the 61st anniversary of the day the United Nations adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The club has been working on the project for one month now.

Throughout the week, the club will also put up video announcements and posters to publicize the event.

Money used to fund these activities came from a $1,000 scholarship awarded to the club by local organization Los Altos Voices for Peace earlier this year. Voices for Peace wanted to support student knowledge on human rights, peace and justice activism.
