The Broken Box Theater Company will begin performing “Romeo and Juliet,” the 16th century story of “star cross’d lovers,” in the Eagle Theatre starting tomorrow, Thursday, March 4.

The actors anticipate that the audience will enjoy the play since it is full of fight scenes.

“The characters are interesting, and there’s a lot of action,” said senior Lucas Carosella, who plays Romeo.

According to Lucas, the cast has modernized the play by wearing contemporary costumes, acting with their modern tendencies and using knives instead of swords in the fight scenes.

The cast has worked hard in preparation for opening night. Lucas said he has spent about an hour every day going over his lines ever since he received his script. According to junior Guanghui Wang, who plays Sister Josephine, a citizen and an officer, the actors have come to know the meaning of the Shakespearean English they speak perfectly even though many find it hard to decipher.

“I made sure I understood the lines, and they were easier to memorize that way,” Lucas said.

Juliet is played by senior Emma Carr, Mercutio by junior Terrence Cape, Lord Capulet by senior Sherwin Tavana, Nurse by senior Jenna Klein, Lady Capulet by senior Clarissa Johnson, Friar Lawrence by senior Sean Armstrong and Paris by senior Charlie Bergevin.

The play runs approximately two-and-a-half hours. Performances are Thursday March 4, Friday, March 5 and Saturday, March 6 at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $5 from any Broken Box member or Broken Box director Nancy Moran and $8 at the door.
