Camp Everytown Begins Wednesday

Students will leave Wednesday, October 7 for Camp Everytown, a three-day retreat in which participants seek to address stereotype-related issues. They will return on Saturday, October 10 at an unconfirmed time in the afternoon.

This year’s camp will take place at a setup in Camp Harmon, which is located in Boulder Creek. Students will engage in activities with the end goal of provoking discussions about race and gender issues.

“I’m really excited to meet people that I wouldn’t normally meet and that wouldn’t be involved in the same activities that I am involved in,” sophomore Meg Nichols said.

Because the camp takes place in an isolated environment, organizers believe the students will be more successful in acknowledging race and gender issues in high school.

Junior Libby Strichartz attended Camp Everytown last year and said she found the experience rewarding.

“It’s extremely honest and very thought-provoking,” Libby said. “It definitely causes a major change of perspective in people.”

The trip costs $300, but financial aid is also available for students.

“Although the group as a club never ends up lasting, it’s the personal changes that stick with you that make it so worthwhile,” Libby said.

This year, the trip’s dates also conflict with SATs and sports events. The camp is usually held once or twice per school year.
