Football Triumphs Over Cupertino 44-37 in Homecoming Game

Eagle football triumphed over Cupertino 44-37 in Los Altos’ Homecoming game on Saturday, October 25.

Cupertino was the leader early on, scoring the game’s first touchdown on an 82-yard run. The Pioneers followed up their touchdown with a 40-yard field goal, bringing the score to 10-0. Los Altos would have none of it, however, as junior Ben Roach cut an inside handoff to the outside for a 65-yard touchdown to close the quarter. The first quarter ended 10-7 in favor of Cupertino.

Cupertino scored on a five yard run just into the second, extending its lead to 17-7, but Los Altos was able to string together a series of big plays and make a comeback from here on out. Following a Los Altos fumble, captain senior Sean Lanoza turned things around by scoring two consecutive touchdowns to put the Eagles within three points of Cupertino. Junior Chad Dowdell received a 28-yard touchdown pass by quarterback Max Higareda to close the quarter and put the Eagles in a 28-24 lead.

Homecoming celebrations were in full-swing during halftime, with performances from the school’s marching band, color guard, and cheer and dance teams. After each Homecoming couple was brought out onto the field, this year’s Homecoming King and Queen were announced: Phillip Almeda and Jhosseline Guardado. The two were crowned by last year’s Homecoming Queen, Meghan McDermott.

Eagle football wasted little time after halftime festivities ended to extend its lead. Sean contributed another touchdown to make the score 36-24 just minutes into the third. The Pioneers put up a strong back half, hitting at 26-yard field goal, scoring on a five-yard run and clearing a 42-yard field goal to overcome the Eagles’ lead and bring the score to 37-36.

In the fourth however, junior Patrick Vargas swept around the left side for a 6-yard, game-winning touchdown. The final score was 44-37, Los Altos.

Los Altos is now 2-2 in league. The Eagles take on the Saratoga Falcons next on Friday, October 31 in a home game.
