GSA holds Day of Silence to recognize bias, abuse

Today, the school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) organized the Day of Silence to coincide with Diversity Week. The Day of Silence hopes to recognize the harassment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.

Students who participated in the day of silence did not speak throughout the day to raise awareness to stop the bullying and harassment of people based on their unique sexualities.

Many students who participated wore colorful duct tape over their mouths to emphasize their silence.

All participants wore small signs safety pinned to their clothes that read:

“Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence (DOS), a national youth movement bringing attention to the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by anti-LGBT bullying, name-calling and harassment. I believe that ending the silence is the first step towards building awarness and making a commitment to address these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.”

Nationwide, the official Day of Silence will be held on Friday, April 16.
