All sophomores and juniors took the PSAT on Wednesday, October 14 while freshmen and seniors attended activities put on by the school. The school was on a minimum day schedule and all students were required to attend the activities.
The PSAT is designed to assess skills students need for the SAT and aims to predict the approximate score a student might earn on the real SAT.
The test includes two critical reading sections, a writing section and two math sections. The total time allowed for the PSAT is two hours and ten minutes.
In addition, the PSAT doubles as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), which means high-scoring juniors have the opportunity to receive a scholarship for excellent scores.
Some time after taking the PSAT, students will receive a score report detailing which kind of questions they missed and how well they did compared to other students.
The school hired new math teacher Michael Richardson to replace former teacher Justine Wong.
He will be teaching Algebra II and Trigonometry/Math Analysis Honors.
Richardson said that he enjoys math for “the logic of it.”
Los Altos has been a welcome change of scenery for Richardson, who moved from Utah to the Bay Area based on the suggestion of friends.
“[Though it is a] different school and different people … [The transition] wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be,” Richardson said.
As of now, Richardson has found the school enjoyable, citing the pleasant atmosphere and cooperative staff as positive points.
A new gate has been built over the walkway between the baseball field and the tennis courts at the back of the school. The gate was built on Wednesday, September 30.
Satterwhite said recent vandalism on campus has been a problem for the administration, who has to immediately clean it up. She hopes the new gate will decrease incidents of vandalism on campus.
“The gate was put up because of vandalism occuring on campus after school hours and late at night,” Principal Wynne Satterwhite said.
The gate will be locked on weekday evenings at approximately 9 p.m. and re-opened early in the mornings.
The gate will remain open at all other times including the weekends.
