UCs to waitlist some student applicants

University of California officials announced that the UCs will implement a waitlist policy for the first time as of Wednesday, January 21. All UCs, excluding UCLA and UC Merced, will adopt a waitlisting system for the fall 2010-2011 freshman admissions.

The waitlist is designed to allow the universities more flexibility with student enrollments for the upcoming 2010 school year.

For the universities that are using the waitlist policy, campuses will send letters to freshman applicants on the waiting list to ask if they are interested in being on the waitlist. Students may receive waitlist offers from multiple campuses and can accept as many as they want.

Campuses will make their final enrollment decisions for students on waitlists and send out acceptance offers by Tuesday, June 1.

Annual event honors African-Americans

The annual Black Student Union (BSU) Week was held from Monday, February 22 to Friday, February 26. The week was organized by the club in order to educate the student body about African- American contributions to American history.

This year’s theme was musicians and how their work has affected society as a whole. For each day of the week, BSU composed a slideshow and played it on the announcements, highlighting one male and one female African-American artist.

BSU organized several other activities for the week including cupcake sales and musical chairs at brunch. The proceeds from this week went toward earthquake relief for Haiti. Also, BSU members partook in a potluck.
