Main Street Singers tour British Isles

The Main Street Singers (MSS) returned on Sunday from a three-week-long tour to the British Isles that lasted from Wednesday, April 7 to Sunday, April 25.

Each spring, the group embarks on an international tour where it performs concerts for the public. This year the group traveled through the United Kingdom and Ireland, performing concerts, sightseeing and experiencing the culture of the British Isles.

Their tour stopped in Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Oban, Paisley and Stirling in Scotland; Dublin, Ballybunion and Tralee in Ireland; Cardiff in Wales and Bath, Abingdon and London in England.

This tour was distinct from previous ones because this year is the group’s 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary. Choral Department Director Mark Shaull decided to bring the group to Britain, the location of the first-ever Main Street tour, in order to celebrate.

Field trip to Great America cancelled

As a result of an incident during last year’s Great America trip, the annual field trip has been cancelled.

The trip, typically an all-day event for Physics Honors students, was originally scheduled for Friday, May 14.

The administration decided to cancel the trip on Tuesday, February 2 of this year.

According to Physics Honors teacher Karen Davis, a senior brought a beer can into Great America during last year’s trip and was suspended. The can was discovered as the student was going through security.

In order to prevent the incident from recurring, the Great America trip for this year was cancelled.

“It’s Principal Wynne Satterwhite’s policy that when there’s an incident like this, the trip is cancelled for the following year,” Davis said. “It’s to send a message to the students.”

LSU hosts Cinco de Mayo festival

The Latin Student Union (LSU) is holding a Cinco de Mayo Fair on Wednesday, May 5 to celebrate a date of great importance for both Mexican and Chicano communities.

The festival will take place in the quad on Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. There will be dance performances by LSU, face painting, taco carts, piñatas, ice cream, churros, mariachi music and games all in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.

Everyone is welcome to come and join in on the celebration.

“It should be really fun,” LSU Co-President junior Mari Molina said. “It’s a good way to have everyone interact with one another and learn about a culture other than their own.”

The club looks forward to celebrating this special Chicano holiday with the rest of the school.
