Due to expected budget cuts, the school has decided to conduct 2 remodeling projects over the summer compared to last year’s 21.
According to Associate Superintendent of Business Joe White, the remodeling budget for the ‘09-’10 school year has not been finalized, but White is preparing for the worst. Several projects that have been repeated for the last few years, such as painting buildings or fixing asphalt, will not take place this year.
“Until we know more about what’s happening to our budget, [we are] saving up to brace for the impact,” White said.
This year’s projects are the repaving of the LAHS and MVHS tracks and replacing the lighting in the LAHS boy’s bathroom.
The school did not resurface the track last year in order to focus on other projects but decided it could not be postponed again.
According to estimates from contractors, the cost for both tracks will come out to $260,000 and the price for the bathroom lighting ranges between $4,000 and $5,000.
Last year the school allotted $1.4 million for summer remodeling.
This year, the district has decided to hold off on other remodeling projects until it knows more about the budget. According to White, redoing the lighting in both the LAHS and MVHS libraries was one of the projects postponed.
“At this point we are anticipating the worst,” White said, “The economy is still not doing well [and] the state of California is definitely not doing well. We are saving up to brace for the impact.”
