Individuals should join in Holiday Faire

Few people know it, but the Holiday Faire has always welcomed individual entrepreneurs at the school to open their own stands, test their business skills and compete with clubs to make some serious cash. More individuals should take the opportunity to participate in the event and make their own money, as it would likely prove an educating, entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable experience.

By involving themselves in the faire, students can make profit during a season when they need it most. The idea of self-supporting businesses is perfectly appropriate for the coming holiday season as it gives students a chance to make money they can spend buying gifts for others.

“The Holiday Faire would be so much more fun with more people trying to sell something instead of just having the clubs selling treats for fundraising,” senior Nicky Young said.

Some clubs argue that if individuals also sold their goods at the Holiday Faire it would cause unfair competition between sellers.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for people to make some money, but there should be a concern for a repetition of products such as everyone selling sugar cookies,” Klüb Kitchen Vice President junior Kelsey Ayers said. “This would mean that every booth wouldn’t do as well selling, and it might take away from the clubs that are trying to fundraise for a cause, which is unfair to the clubs.”

But such a situation can be avoided. There is a good chance that the money students earn during the faire will be returned back to the school whether through supporting a club or purchasing a product from another stand. In general, the benefits that individual participants bring outweigh the drawbacks.

Individual sellers will likely circulate the money they earn within the faire if the goods are of high quality, and this money will eventually come back to support students and clubs.

They would also introduce friendly competition between more diverse sellers, inspiring more people to attend and raising the quality and variety of goods sold at the faire. This could encourage more to come and make the experience more enjoyable for everyone.

“[It would be] a great improvement to the Holiday Faire because everyone can make some money,” sophomore Ellie Baer said.

If individuals joined in on the Holiday Faire spirit, it would not only inspire a greater attendance from the school, but also increase school spirit and provide students with a lesson in business which will help prepare them for life outside of high school.
