Led by clutch defense and 25 points from guard senior Sean Wells, the Eagles started off the season by defeating Pacific Athletic League heavyweight Menlo-Atherton.
With both sides filling up their stands, the Eagles were able to pull out a 60-55 win over the Bears and hope to have made a lasting impression when it comes to CCS seeding.
“To come out strong was a big win,” point-guard senior Spencer Wells said. “Starting the season strong was big for us. MA is a good team. Beating them was definitely a big boost.”
Even though the Eagles held the lead after first 3 minutes, the game was kept close as each team battled on each side of the court.
Defense proved to be a major factor in the game as both sides had key stops throughout the game, including a huge block from Spencer in the first half.
After Spencer’s block, the Eagles and their fans seemed to be revived, and in the last few minutes of the first quarter the Eagles had their biggest lead of 26-13. After a time out, Menlo-Atherton was able to come back to end the half 28-21.
Sean made two free throws, finishing the game 10-10 from the line, to make the score 60-55. Menlo-Atherton ended the game with a last-second three-pointer as time expired.
“A couple years ago they hit a game winning three to send it into overtime and then they won in overtime, so we wanted to get them back,” Sean said. “Getting a win against them was big for us.”
