Football Thrashes Marina in Shutout

The football team beat Marina by a score of 20-0 yesterday, September 12, under the lights at Monterey Peninsula College. The win brings the Eagles’ record to an even 1-1.

Los Altos came out of the gate strong, scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter in quick succession. With about eight minutes to go, senior Sean Lanoza ran 29 yards for the touchdown, and an extra point by senior kicker Matt Schonher made it 7-0.

Just five minutes later, it was Lanoza again with the rushing touchdown, this one going 16 yards. Another Schonher PAT brought the score to 14-0.

The score stayed the same for the rest of the first half. With about seven minutes left in the third quarter, junior quarterback Kyle Gounod found junior receiver Patrick Vargas for 35 yards and the touchdown, extending the Eagles’ lead to 20-0.

Marina never got on the scoreboard, in large part to a stout Eagle defense. Los Altos forced two turnovers, one and one fumble recovery.

“We had good defense and just kept them from scoring and offense did just enough for the win,” co-captain senior Phillip Almeda said.

Overall, it was a good all-around early season victory for the Eagles.

“[It was] a great win,” Kyle said. “[The] team played hard.”

Los Altos will have their home opener next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against Burlingame. After that, league play starts with a game at Lynbrook on October 3.
