Giants Thrashed by Royals, Game 7 Forced

The San Francisco Giants were thrashed by the Kansas City Royals today, October 28, falling 0-10.

The game started out quietly, with both Jake Peavy for the Giants and Yordano Ventura pitching scoreless first innings.

In the second, the Royals broke out. After two singles to lead off the inning, the Royals’ third baseman Mike Moustakas hit a double to drive a run in. After a strikeout and an infield single to load the bases, right fielder Nori Aoki worked a seven pitch at-bat that ended with a single to bring home another run to make it 2-0.

That was it for Peavy. San Francisco turned to its start long reliever, Yusmeiro Petit, who had yet to give up a run this postseason. Coming into a bases loaded situation, that changed quickly. The first batter he faced, center fielder Lorenzo Cain singled to bring home two runs.

4-0.

After a wild pitch to move Cain to second, first baseman Eric Hosmer cleared the bases with a double.

6-0.

The next batter, designated hitter Billy Butler, hit another double to bring home Hosmer.

7-0.

It was the most runs the Kansas City Royals have ever scored in a single postseason inning.

San Francisco had a chance to chip away at the deficit in the top of the fourth. After left fielder Travis Ishikawa struck out, Ventura walked three straight batters to load the bases. However, catcher Buster Posey swung at the first pitch he saw and grounded into an inning ending double play.

Kansas City added runs in third, fifth and seventh innings to get to their final tally.

With the win, the Royals forced a decisive Game 7, which will be tomorrow at 5 p.m. Tim Hudson will start for the Giants and Jeremy Guthrie will go for the Royals.

The silver lining to the Giants’ admittedly dark cloud is that despite Peavy and Petit’s inefficiency, they only had to use three other pitchers, one of them (Ryan Vogelsong) a starter to finish the game. That means that they have all of their “core four,” that is, Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez, Sergio Romo and Santiago Casilla, rested and ready for action. There have also been rumors swirling that ace Madison Bumgarner, who has already started six games this postseason, could come in out of the bullpen for some innings in relief.
