Girls Volleyball Takes Down Burlingame in Straight Sets

The Eagles took on the Burlingame Panthers at their first home game, Thursday, September 11, and notched their second win of the season in two games with a commanding straight set victory. Los Altos clinched the first set 25-16, followed shortly by 25-18 and 25-16 wins.

Los Altos and Burlingame had back-to-back scoring, yet the Eagles never gave up the lead nor the pressure, against the Panthers.

“Our serve returns and defense were really good tonight and that meant we could get aggressive serve returns,” senior co-captain Carmen Annevelink said. “That translated into running a fast-paced offense.”

After losing a vital group of seniors, Coach Peter Kim strives to replicate the brilliance of last year’s team.

“Last year the team really played as one and it showed—we got second in the state,” Kim said. “As a team this year, we need to work on playing as a team and being cohesive.”

Los Altos has made a presence with its first two dominant victories, yet the games to come may be harder than expected.

“These past two games have been a test to see the potential of our team,” Kim said. “We have a tough season this year, a lot of good teams ahead.”

The Eagles’ next game will be on Wednesday, September 17, against Valley Christian, which looks to be their toughest opponent yet. They will be returning home to play Monta Vista on Tuesday, September 30.

“It’s the beginning of the season and we have a very new team but these two wins have shown us our potential for this year,” Carmen said.
