The golf team finished its season with an overall record of 10-1-1. The team won league finals and also made CCS as a team.
The golf team placed at several key tournaments during their season. At the Aptos Invitational, the team finished third to Palma High School and five strokes behind Los Gatos High School. At the Los Altos Invitational, the team lost by four strokes to Los Gatos. However, senior Sean Kawaguchi tied as a medalist with an even par 72 at the invitational.
Sean said the team’s only other big tournament was league finals at San Juan Oaks. At the tournament, the team beat Los Gatos, Palo Alto High School, Gunn High School and Milpitas High School among others.
Sean and sophomore Zach Nicolet earned All-League Honors by shooting two of the lowest scores. Sean also tied for medalist honors, with scores of 76 and 81 over the two tournament days.
“[The San Juan Oaks tournament] was our biggest win as it qualified us for CCS for the first time in almost ten years and proved that we are the team to beat,” Sean said.
Sean believes that the success of the team this year can be accredited to teamwork.
“This year our team was successful because of the camaraderie the team had and how we each had something to contribute,” Sean said. “We knew it was our year to go out and win and we did just that.”
Other members on the team also said that hard work was the team’s key to success.
“I think what made the team so successful this year was the fact that everyone improved so much since last year,” sophomore Lauren Kim said. “We couldn’t have been as successful as we were with just one person carrying the entire team. It was a combination of everybody’s talent and hard work that got us this far.”
Lauren said there were “some ups and downs in terms of which matches [the team] won and lost, but overall [the season] was an awesome experience.”
CCS will begin on Monday, May 10.
