Several members of varsity boys tennis placed in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League (SCVAL) championships on Thursday, April 29 and Friday April 30.
Seniors Bryan Cassella and Matthew Hoang, seeded two in doubles, placed fourth in the tournament, while senior Charlie Bergevin, seeded number two, placed third overall in singles.
Junior Justin Koehler, seeded number one in singles in the league, placed first overall on Thursday but was injured and had to withdraw, placing fourth.
“I’m proud of this season and how hard (the players) worked,” coach Cuong Duong said.
Duong attributed the team’s performance in the league this season to its depth.
Duong said he has several solid players–No. 1 Justin Koehler and No. 2 Charlie Bergevin in singles–and that “from No. 3 singles to No. 4 doubles, we’re pretty consistent.”
Other members who made it to SCVALs were doubles partners freshman John Dai and senior Charlie Falconer.
The team is also headed for the Central Coast Section (CCS) team playoffs. The team, which finished at the bottom of the De Anza Division a year ago, grabbed the top spot in the El Camino Division last week after beating Wilcox 7-0 on Thursday, April 20.
The team’s overall record for the season was 11-1.
But despite its performance in league and at SCVAL, team members said CCS should be more difficult.
“CCS is a mass of the best teams in multiple division and we aren’t the highest division,” Bryan said. “There are going to be some really good teams.”
Duong agreed.
“I don’t expect to go far in the playoffs,” Duong said. “I’d be happy to win a round or two.”
