Sophomore Lydia Vieraitis, forward on the varsity field hockey team, made varsity as a freshman and continues to be a key contributor to the team.
“She’s a hard worker and incredibly fast,” Coach Mary Donahue said. “She’s never satisfied with her performance and is always concentrated on working hard.”
For Lydia, the best part of field hockey is that it is a team sport.
“I like all the players on the team,” Lydia said. “It’s rewarding when we win a game together and know we played well.”
Lydia also has future aspirations and goals for her field hockey endeavors. She hopes to play Division III in college and wants to be team captain in her senior year. She also would like to score ten goals by the end of the season.
“She’s good at field hockey,” Donahue said. “The sky’s the limit for her.”
Junior Colin Mulcahy, offensive player on the school’s varsity boys water polo team, has been on varsity since he was a freshman. Colin was Most Valuable Player in the league last year as a sophomore. Varsity boys water polo coach Ed Samuels characterizes him as “one of the top three or four offensive players in the country.”
For Colin, the best part of water polo is “the team aspect, the camaraderie.” His technique and ability have helped him become a valuable player to the team.
“He has great balance in the water, leg strength and a great arm,” Samuels said. “He also has a lot of mobility in front of the cage.”
Colin’s ability also comes from his history as a water polo player.
Colin’s main goal for this season is to “make a good, solid round in CCS,” and he also hopes to play water polo in college.
“[Water polo] has everything I like to do: swim, shoot, score,” Colin said. “I’ve played for a long time and it’s a good sport for me.”
