Soccer
In an attempt to get to know a boy she once had a crush on, freshman Isabel Lefebvre began to play soccer. After moving to Los Altos from Canada at age nine, Isabel went to her first soccer camp where she met local soccer coach Ross Ireland, who told her to try out for his new team.
Isabel has been playing for six years now, and is currently playing as a forward on varsity.
“So far [the team] has been great,” she said.
One of the reasons Isabel came to the school was to play under Head Coach Erin Montoya.
“She’s a great coach, and the girls are very welcoming,” Isabel said.
Her club team, De Anza Force, has won many tournaments including the District Cup and Soccer by the Bay.
Isabel hopes to “keep [her] talent for college” and play for a university through a scholarship after graduating.
Wrestling
Persuaded to try out the sport by his older brother, senior Joey Buckley has been wrestling since sixth grade. Joey, who is varsity team captain this year, enjoys the sport because it’s “unique.”
“There are hardly any sports that are like it,” Joey said. “I like that it’s an individual sport. I like that it’s just me out there on the mat. But most of all I like to win.”
On the school team, Joey placed first at the Bill Martell Invitational Tournament and the Marin Catholic tournament, and he was awarded as the best incoming wrestler. Joey wrestled for the Brussels American High School in Belgium, was team MVP and placed fourth in the Department of Defense Dependents Schools European Championships.
Joey hopes to remain involved in the sport after high school and wrestle on a team in college.
“I am definitely going to keep wrestling after high school, preferably on a college team,” Joey said. “But I am okay with just wrestling in a club or even coaching, just as long as I am around the sport.”
