Sophomore wins third in girls state wrestling championship

Sophomore Jessica Contreras placed third in the Cadet Girls Freestyle State Championship this past weekend.

The tournament took place in Fresno at the Selland Arena from Friday, April 30 to Sunday, May 1.

“It was a little hard because it’s a different style of wrestling that I’m not used to,” Jessica said. “I trained for Greco Roman and Freestyle [wrestling]. That helped me a lot.”

Students need not qualify for the tournament. Rather, it is open to those who wish to sign up.

Jessica plans to compete again next year. She received even greater excitement when a spectator who viewed her performance suggested she join the girls’ national team, which she said he hopes she is “able to do.”
