Team Bud Casey defeated White T’s Reloaded 1-0 to advance to the finals of the school dodgeball tournament this afternoon, Wednesday, May 26.
Early on in the allotted four-minute match period, it became apparent that the result of the match would come down to whichever team outperformed the other in the area of catching—a skill for which both teams were known going in to the match.
At 3:30, early on in the four-minute period, Team Bud Casey made two subsequent catches and threw a player out to go up 6-3. At 2:30, a risky catch by senior Alfredo Marin tied the teams 3-3.
The long period was marked with a swift series of catches until the end, which drew loud cheers from the audience.
P.E. teacher John Payne of White T’s Reloaded made a catch at 1:10 to give the team a 3-2 advantage with one minute to go. However, with two seconds left on the clock and a 2-1 advantage, Team Bud Casey then tagged out Payne to win the match.
White T’s Reloaded member senior Alfredo Marin, who made several key catches for his team, was pleased with the level of play.
“We’re both good teams with good catchers,” Alfredo said. “[The match was] excellent. We played better than the last two years.”
Alfredo would have approached the game differently if he had the chance.
“If I had thrown the ball lower I would have gotten more of them out,” Alfredo said.
Team Bud Casey member senior Sean Small said that this was the most important match of the team’s winning tournament.
“Everyone contributed to make crucial catches,” Sean said. “It was huge. That was our biggest game.”
Team Bud Casey later went on to win the championship.
