Varsity football head coach receives award from SF 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers awarded the Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week Award to the varsity football coach Bill Waggoner on Tuesday, November 10. Waggoner, who has been coaching for two years, received a phone call that morning from 49er football player Jared Muela notifying him of his win.

“We had just come off of a huge win and possibly our best game against Monta Vista,” varsity football player junior Giovanni Ibarra said. “After winning a game in a blowout to win the league title it wasn’t a surprise that he won the award.”

The Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week program is named after Los Gatos High School’s former head coach. The award was designed to aid and promote high school football and give recognition to hard-working coaches. Every football season 10 high school coaches are chosen to receive the award.

Waggoner received a $500 gift certificate from Kelly-Moore Paints towards beautifying the school and a $1,000 donation to the school’s football program from the 49ers Foundation.

“It was a surprise being named Coach of the Week, but a great honor,” Waggoner said. “I’m really happy for the players and the exposure this award gives the football program at Los Altos. It shows that what the coaching staff and players are doing at Los Altos is working to create a solid program moving forward. I hope to continue coaching at Los Altos for many years.”

Waggoner was determined to improve the football team from last season.

In addition to the two donations, the Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week Award also awards its recipients with free tickets to a 49ers game. Waggoner and the varsity football team will attend the 49ers game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday, December 27.

“It will be fun to watch a professional team practice and see how the players and coaches interact,” Waggoner said. “I am looking forward to seeing how the coaches handle the practice, and I will look for things they do that can help me become a better coach.”
