Volleyball falls in rivalry match

Girls volleyball lost to rival MVHS Spartans 15-25 on Tuesday, October 6.

In a game where attendance was at a season high for both schools, the match was mostly one-sided from the first game.

A spike by senior Paige Logan, set up by senior Rachel Nelson, made the score 6-10 Mountain View, but the Eagles never got closer than 4 points for the rest of the set.

After winning the first set 25-16, the Spartans started the second set with 6 straight points with freshman Becky Slattery serving.

With numerous blocks from sophomore Heather Sangster and digs from Rachel, the other Eagle defenders could not execute their defense as the Spartans spiked the ball frequently. Despite a 3-point rally at the end of the second set, the Spartans defeated the Eagles 25-14 to make the match 2 sets to 0.

Led by nationally-ranked sophomore Brittany Howard, the Spartans quickly took a 21-9 lead to start off the third match. After two consecutive clutch digs by Rachel, a kill by Paige and junior Kelsey Ayers serving, the team’s veterans lead the Eagles with a small comeback of 6 points to make the third set 15-24. The Eagles were then defeated 15-25.

After this game, the Eagles fell to 14-6-0 overall record, while the Spartans moved up to a record of 10-6-0.
