The varsity girls volleyball team lost to rival MVHS Spartans on Tuesday, October 6. The Eagles fell in straight sets 25-16, 25-14 and 25-15.
In a game where attendance was at a season high for both schools, the match was mostly one-sided from the start.
A spike by senior Paige Logan and set up by senior Rachel Nelson, made the score 6-10 Spartans, but the Eagles never got closer than 4 points for the rest of the set.
After winning the first set 25-16, the Spartans started the second set with 6 straight points served by MVHS freshman Becky Slattery.
With numerous blocks from sophomore Heather Sangster and digs from Rachel, the other Eagle defenders could not execute their defense due to the Spartans’ spikes.
Despite a 3-point rally at the end of the second set, the Spartans defeated the Eagles 25- 14 leading the match 2 sets to 0.
Led by nationally-ranked sophomore Brittany Howard, the Spartans quickly took a 21-9 lead to start off the third match.
After two consecutive clutch digs by Rachel, a kill by Paige and junior Kelsey Ayers’ serves, the team’s veterans led the Eagles
with a comeback of 6 points, boosting the score. The Eagles were then defeated 15-25.
Coach Jason Kennedy noted that a consistently low energy level and several careless errors were present in the game. He said these detrimentally impacted players’ performance on the court. “It really came down to passing,” Kennedy said. “We couldn’t pass very successfully especially in the third game. They just blitzed us for a lot of runs and that was the big difference. It was a matter of keeping up the intensity. We played well in the first [set], but we couldn’t seem to put together a whole game.”
After this defeat, the Eagles’ overall record became 14-6- 0, while the Spartans’ record became 10-6-0.
