As the summer of 2011 approaches, there will likely be changes to the MVLA district’s Summer School program. Due to budget cuts, the district is currently debating whether to modify the program. These changes can range anywhere from cutting the number of classes, limiting the number of students who can attend, shortening Summer School and in extreme, but unlikely circumstances, cutting Summer School altogether. As of present time, the status of Summer School program is unclear.
For the past two years, the Art Club has organized an art auction where art and photo students can auction off their works. This year’s auction took place on Tuesday, March 1 in the school cafeteria. Half of the proceeds, approximately $2,500, will go to scholarships for students going on the art trip to France this spring break. The other half will go to the student artists who created each piece.
The LAHS Robotics Team will participate in the For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics Competition this month. They will compete at the Sacramento Regional at UC Davis from Wednesday, March 16 to Thursday, March 17 and at the Silicon Valley Regional at San Jose State University from Thursday, March 31 to Saturday, April 2. The team has worked since January to construct a robot. The competition’s challenge is called “Logomotion”; the goal is to create FIRST’s logo using different shapes and sizes of inner tubes and hooking them on hangers at differing heights, followed by deploying a pole-climbing robot.
This year, students who are part of the National Charity League (NCL) chapter hosted the Princess Project. This project was held for a two-week period from Monday, February 7 to Friday, February 18 with the goal of gathering used dresses, jewelry and shoes to distribute to girls who cannot afford to buy these items for their prom.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) is an advanced teaching credential which complements a standard teacher license. English teacher Ryan Ikeda and science teacher Danielle Paige are looking to become NBPTS certified, while English teacher Galen Rosenberg is becoming re-certified.
Fourteen students from the Haiti Solidarity Club, accompanied by Adviser Seth Donnelly and two chaperones, left for their second trip to Haiti on Saturday, February 19. They returned on Sunday, February 28 after eight days in Pétion-Ville, a small local community in the area of Port-au-Prince.
The Math Department opened up a new Algebra II class for students, primarily juniors, who received a failing grade during the first semester of Algebra II. The class, which began around the beginning of February, will cover both first and second semester curriculum. The program will end two weeks into the summer if it finishes the required amount of work. If not, the class will be extended.
Culinary teacher Patty Fambrini’s class will learn about and experience cuisines from around the globe.
For years, students have heard that America is founded on democracy. And while they are poring over Holt and Houghton Mifflin, the fight for democracy is ongoing outside their textbooks.
